The tragic death of Saramae Radel has left an indelible mark on the Selinsgrove and Mansfield communities. A gifted athlete, a dedicated student, and a kind soul, Saramae’s loss is felt deeply by all who knew her. She was more than just a standout field hockey player; she was a force of positivity and determination.
Saramae began her field hockey career at Selinsgrove Area High School, where she quickly earned a reputation for her talent and leadership. As a senior, she was named team captain and earned First Team All-State and First Team All-PHAC honors, leading her team with impressive statistics.
She played a pivotal role in her high school team’s success, contributing 13 goals and multiple assists during her career. Saramae’s leadership extended beyond the field, as she was also a member of the German National Honors Society, balancing her academic and athletic commitments with ease.
In 2019, Saramae brought her talent to Mansfield University, where she continued to excel as a midfielder. She appeared in 19 games that season, starting all of them, and made an immediate impact by scoring two goals and contributing four assists. Saramae’s work ethic and dedication were recognized, as she was named to the PSAC Scholar-Athlete list and was included on the Dean’s List.
Her college career continued to flourish over the next few years. In 2021, she was named to the PSAC All-Conference third team after a remarkable season, scoring seven goals and assisting four others. Saramae’s clutch performances, including her overtime game-winning goal against Lindenwood, showcased her ability to rise to the occasion when her team needed her most.
Throughout her time at Mansfield, Saramae was known for her leadership both on and off the field. She was a key contributor to the Mountaineers’ success, helping guide her team with 16 points in 2022 and continuing to play a central role in the midfield in 2023. Saramae’s love for field hockey, her teammates, and her university was apparent in every game she played.
Off the field, Saramae was studying Business Administration, and her professors and peers admired her determination and positive attitude. She was an inspiration to everyone around her, and her academic and athletic achievements spoke volumes about her character and her ability to balance the demands of both.
Saramae’s untimely passing has left a gap in the hearts of those who knew her. Yet, her legacy lives on. Her contributions to her teams, her community, and her academic pursuits will be remembered for years to come. Saramae may be gone, but her spirit and the memories she created will continue to inspire everyone she touched.
