Following the deaths of two senior citizens at the Waterford assisted living facility in West Omaha, the Omaha Police Department has verified a tragic murder-suicide. Early in the morning, officers received a report that someone had fallen inside one of the facility’s apartments. Authorities discovered two people who had been shot and killed when they arrived.
Douglas Van Horn, 88, and his wife, Evelyn Van Horn, 86, have been identified as the deceased. Douglas Van Horn killed his wife, according to the police, and then killed himself. Investigators still haven’t revealed a clear reason for the unfortunate event.
The Waterford facility is a well-known neighborhood that offers local elders accommodation and care. The fatalities have sparked numerous inquiries about what caused such a terrible incident in what appeared to be a tranquil setting.
Omaha Police are still looking into the killings and are requesting any information from the public that could help them understand what happened before the murder-suicide. Many in the community are left to consider the reality of mental health and elder care in light of the couple’s untimely passing.
